Adam J Bernard is a Creative, Actor & Singer-Songwriter. He exploded straight into the UK’s West End limelight on December 13th 2016; Press Night for the Musical Production of Dreamgirls at the Savoy Theatre, where he originated the role of the wild & sexy Jimmy ‘Thunder’ Early. Having loose character similarities to the Godfather of Soul, James Brown, Adam went on to win an Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in a Musical the following year.
Despite late recognition after beginning his career in Autumn ’11, Adam stepped into the Industry without professional training.
Previously, whilst attending Langley Grammar School Adam played for Arsenal FC U15 and his County team BERKSHIRE. After leaving Arsenal, Adam had a successful U16s Schoolboy season and was offered a Non-Contract Football Scholarship at Queen’s Park Rangers F.C and played for their Reserves team frequently during his time. He went on to sign and play for Brentford FC U18s, Reserves and also the 1st Team during Pre-Season that year. Although disappointed, not earning a Professional Contract allowed Adam to play semi-professionally for many years and also gave time to explore other ventures, his other loves & hobbies; acting, singing & dancing.
Encouraged by his Mother he began regular Supporting Artiste for many years, working on sets such as Eastenders and Holby City to experience set-life and also made it to the 2nd stage of The X-Factor: Bootcamp in 2010, being cut before Judge’s Houses. Adam’s eldest Brother was a signed UK Artist called De-Ryus (Grass Ain’t Greener) under Arista Records. Having this influence, as well as the likes of James Brown & Michael Jackson particularly, Adam has sung and danced since he can remember and it seems the early years of his life was preparing him for what was to come.
He made a makeshift CV consisting of his making it to X-Factor’s Bootcamp, and upgraded Supporting Artiste roles which featured him or gave him a few words or lines to say on Camera. He was determined to find a way into the Industry from an untrained background; he sent out over 50 CV’s and 1 agent gave him a chance. Sheri Copeland (Ark Management) gave him the opportunity and became his “Industry Mum” teaching him everything he needed to learn about Musical Theatre specifically, but the industry as a whole generally. They went on to have a very successful working relationship for many years.
Thrusting himself into the deep end, Adam became a Lead Vocalist on the Production THRILLER LIVE! on the 2011 European Tour. After his first taste as a Stage Performer, Adam continued working behind the scenes with private singing lessons from now a life-long mentor and family-friend, the First Lady of SOUL II SOUL: Rose Windross (Fairplay), and acting classes at The Actors Centre to solidify what he had learnt and experienced on his first Tour. He made his West End Debut with the show on a 6-month contract at the Lyric Theatre, Shaftesbury Avenue, before starting an International Tour of Brazil in 2013.
His most recent role being Lieutenant Walker in Feature Film BACKDRAFT 2.
His other credits include: Young Charlie in GANGS OF LONDON, Stunt Double for John Boyega’s FINN in STAR WARS VII: THE FORCE AWAKENS, Dan Strongman in HOLBY CITY, Reynolds in US TV SERIES: LEGENDS SERIES 2, Lead Feature in “IF CARLSBERG DID KICKABOUTS…” (Commercial), Stally (Lead) in Feature Film 6 ROUNDS, Seaweed.
